International Day of Solidarity with Chinese AIDS activists

(Mar. 18, 2006)On Wednesday, March 22 at 12:30 pm, AIDS, GLBT, and human rights activists in New York, Washington, DC and Paris (so far) will hold a short, symbolic hunger strike in solidarity with the dozens of Chinese people with AIDS who have been harassed by authorities in recent weeks, and for Hu Jia, a Chinese activist currently in his fourth week of detention. These peaceful solidarity actions will be held at Chinese embassies and consulates. In the US, there are embassies or consulates in Washington, DC and in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. For locations of Chinese embassies and consulates worldwide, see http://www.fmprc.gov.cn/eng/wjb/zwjg/default.htm

Join us! We include groups ranging from Amnesty International to ACT UP, from the Student Global AIDS Campaign to GAPIMNYC, for gay Asian New Yorkers.Domestic as well as international AIDS activists are also involved.

In the past month in China, a diverse, historic coalition of AIDS and pro- democracy activists, and the lawyers that defend them in the Chinese legal system, have been beaten, harassed, and ultimately kidnapped (or as they say in China, "detained") by the government for organizing their own symbolic hunger strikes to protest government repression of activists. At the same time, dozens of people with AIDS were held under house arrest to prevent them from reaching delegates during the just ended People's Congress.

This is a simple, powerful action (and should be fun, with all the groups involved). To participate, all you need is your self, a sign (we can send you Chinese text) explaining your views, and access to a reliable digital camera--there will be one at each action. If you want, you can bring yourorganization's banner or other visuals. We will photograph our actions, send them to reporters, post them online and distribute them via Chinese language list servs so that Chinese government, the press, and people with AIDS themselves will understand that there is international solidarity with people with AIDS in China. We will be both a real and an online solidarity action.

We demand the unconditional release of Hu Jia and an end to the repression against people with AIDS, AIDS activists, and other groups trying to make peaceful change in China.

In great solidarity,

Katie Krauss
