Journalist Li Changqing is charged - Trial on 19th
(Jan. 17, 2006)Journalist Li Changqing (vice-director of interviewing department of Fuzhou Daily before arrested) is charged "creating false, horrible information on purpose", and the trial is scheduled on 19th of this month.
Boxun just learned this charge from his attorney Mr. Mo Shaoping. Li Changqing was interrogated in November 2004, and was arrested on Feberuary 3rd, 2005. Li was charged "Subversion of State Power" for articles about Huang Jingao's case in Boxun. This charge has been dismissed. But Li got another charge - "creating false, horrible information on purpose" based on one report in Boxun, dated Oct. 13, 2004. This report was about a dangerous disease - Denggue Fever in Fuzhou City.
In Boxun's report, it stated that there were about 100 people infected.
The disease was first observed on Sept. 9th 2004 in this city, but Fuzhou City did not report the incident until Oct. 15th, 2004, after Boxun reported. According to official information, there were 94 confirmed infected this disease.
Boxun's report did not show that it was from Li Changqing. Even if it was provided by Li Changqing, the contents of this report were close to fact. At the same time, the local government knew the incident at the beginning, and covered the fact for more than one month, who should be punished?
