Yang Jianli's Colleagues write to Rice for his return
(Jan. 19, 2005) The Foundation for China in the 21st Century write a letter to the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs Condoleezza Rice as an effort to secure his early return. Signed by the acting director Song Yongyi, the letter first expressed the sincere thanks to Rice for her letter to Yang's wife Christina Fu and to the U.S. government for its ungoing efforts in dealing with the Chinese government. He then pointed out that "he suffered a stroke in July of 2004. On a recent visit by his brother and sister, he reported that he has continued to experience numbness on his left side and is not receiving adequate medical case."
Dr. Yang's name is on a PRC blacklist of 49 Chinese pro-democracy activists, who were barred from entering China. In April 2002, he was arrested by the Chinese government when he traveled there to investigate the protests of unemployed workers in northest China. After more than a year of illegal detention, he was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of espionage and crossing the national border illegally. According to Chinese law, he is eligible to be released on medical parole.
Dr. Yang Jianli is the president of the Foundation for China in the 21st Century. "Under his leadership our Foundation, as an intellectual think-tank, has provided theoretical and strategic thinking for transformation of constitutional democratization in China during the past decade. At the end, the letter asked Dr. Rice to continue her efforts after she is confirmed as Secretary of State.
