Thousand accidents of cutting fingers a year in one county
(Feb. 27, 2003) According to Central&People's Broadcast, there are about 1000 accidents of cutting off fingers in production lines in Yongkang County of Zhejiang Province a year. Among those workers who lost fingers, some got a little compensation, some did not get anything but lost the jobs.
Yongkang has about 7000 metal workshops/factories, most equipments do not have the adequate protection system that is about $240/set. The owners ignore the need for cost saving. (博讯boxun.com)
In China, most workers get very limited compensation after injury in production line. It is a disaster for a worker to lose an arm or leg. In addition to little compensation, most of them will lose the job and will hardly find another one with disability. In developed countries, most injuries are compensated so well that the victims do not have to worry about future's living expenses. In China, victims must face double impact:losing job and physical disability without much compensation.
The media in China are paying more attention to this area, unfortunately, western world has been fasinated by the economic 'miracle' of China and has largely ignored the basic darkness of China.
